TOPIC 1: BIGGEST CHALLENGE -- Working on your first news story for this class …
1. What has been the biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge working on this story was finding the time to interview people. I also found that people were quite intimidated by some of the questions that I asked and were a little hesitant about replying to them.

2. What will you do different or improve for your next news story? Explain.

My next news story I will set aside more hours each week to work on the layout and writing of my story to make my story a little more interesting and stronger.

3. Also describe your experience doing interviews. What did you learn about the interview process? What will you do different next time?

I learned from this process that people are happy to answer questions if they are not put on the spot with the questions. One professor I interviewed asked to see the questions before hand so that he would know what to expect. He gave me the best answers for my story.

TOPIC 2: EDNA -- Reading the first two chapters Edna Buchanan’s book, “The Corpse Had a Familiar Face”:
1. What did you find most interesting? Tell why, and include at least one related QUOTE from the book.
What I found most interesting about Edna's book was how she never went to school to become a reporter she just worked very hard and did it. I also love how she has such a passion and so much compassion for the people she reports.
2. Second, I realize that few, if any, of you are likely to be covering murder in Miami in the near future. However, what TIP have you already picked up from Edna that you can apply to your news reporting and writing? Discuss that tip and how you can apply it to your news reporting at LBCC.

A tip that I am going to use from Edna is how she networked so well, and was always giving her all in every story. In the book she is able to get these great stories by always being in the field working or talking to families of crimes or the criminals. Edna was also fearless and even if she was uncomfortable in certain situations she would woman up and do them anyway.

Men's Basketball Lose Again

“They played hard and were in the game the whole time,” said head coach of Lane Community College Bruce Chaka. “They did a really good job in their zone defense, we’re fortunate to get out of here with a win.” The RoadRunners had a tough loss against the Titans Wednesday night at a home game. Lane Community College won 81 to 68. The RoadRunners had 18 assists and 14 turnovers compared to 14 assists and 17 turnovers for the Titans.
“I think in the second half we definitely came out a little better, the first half we were a little flat.” said guard Kaj Bansen. “Next game we’re going to pass the ball a little more and have less quick shots then we did tonight.” Bansen led the team with 7 field goals made scoring six three pointers.
“I just feel like we were pretty stagnant offensively,” said Andrew Evans point guard for the team. “ A lot starts with me, I feel like I could have created more opportunities for my teammates.”
Head men’s basketball coach Randy Falk was happy with his teams performance. “Overall I thought we played a lot better, we didn’t do a very good job in some situations which led to Lane getting 19 points off of turnovers, but I thought we did a pretty good job on our zone defense rotation,” said Falk. “I thought we gave ourselves a pretty good effort. Lanes a pretty good team so we had to play really well. I thought with the exception of just a handful of possessions we did a really good job.” Falk stated that the team would be working on their defensive transition and half court defense for their next game against Portland.

“We’ll learn from our mistakes,” said Evans, “hopefully we can get a lot more wins the second half of this season.” The RoadRunners look forward to their next home game Jan. 30 against Portland Community College.

LBCC Advice: What Students Should Know

As a fellow student here at LBCC I would like my college experience to be a great one. For this very reason I have decided to interview some of our amazing staff here at LBCC to figure out some advice they wish every student knew.
Andrew Vosgien a mathematics professor expresses what he wishes every student did “I wish students wouldn’t wait so long to get help. I get so many students around weeks 9/10 asking what they can do to pass.” Vosgien stated that if each student would make an effort to speak up in class when they didn’t understand, it would make his teaching life a lot easier. Andrew also let me know that side conversations in class were a common annoyance. “ You can see the reactions of students behind the student that’s being disruptive.” As being a student who always got “talks too much in class” on her progress report, this was great for me to know.
Sharece Bunn was another person I had the pleasure of speaking with. She informed me that she likes it when students take control of their studies and know where they are headed in their academic year. Something she admires from students is honesty. “I once had a student tell me that he didn’t do his schoolwork because he chose his family life over it. I really respected him for that.” Bunn also said that having a strong support network helped her to do well in college.
All of the staff I spoke to at LBCC had a genuine attitude and wanted to help as much as they could. I feel that if we understand that professors were once students themselves it would greatly benefit us as students. I am very happy that I chose to attend Linn Benton Community College and next time I want to compliment a girl on her jacket during a lecture or check my phone I will refrain and give my professors the respect they deserve.

Topic 1: About Me

What prompted you to enroll in this course?:
I have always dreamed of becoming a broadcasting journalist. I feel that this class would help give me the tools needed to begin the process of pursuing my dream and making it a reality.

What are you most interested in learning about Journalism/News Reporting?
I am most interested in learning about how to effectively communicate a strong story that touches people and help them to think outside of themselves. I feel that so many people get so involved in their everyday routine that they sometimes forget about others and how they can help make a difference.

Tell us something you are passionate about outside of college:
I am most passionate about being a Mother. I am extremely honored to be able to be a role model and teacher to my two girls. Even though this is a major responsibility I am happy to accept it and hope to raise strong independent women.
